The formation of subcultures and social control theory

The middle class in today’s world dominates nearly the entire societies around the globe. In most of the instances, the middle-class society faces some social problems such as the middle-class delinquency and abuse of drugs. The social problems are fueled by some factors that are in existence in the societies that are dominated by the middle class. The factors that influence social problems in the middle-class are presented as below.

According to Carter (2001), parenting plays a crucial role in influencing delinquency and self-control across all the classes in the society. Additionally, it is argued that individuals that lack self-control in most of the instances tend to pursue immediate pleasures that are not criminal in nature. The individual under this category will indulge themselves in drugs and substance abuse such as smoking, drinking, gambling and drug use (Gotttfredson and Hirschi, 1990). Thus, where individuals are not engaged in delinquencies they are either involved in other harmful vices that destroy their lives.

The rising cost of living is the major factor that influences the occurrence of middle-class delinquency. Today’s world there has been a major shift in the economy and the policies that are implemented by various government administrations around the globe. As a result, of the major shifts, the traditional route into the middle class has become not only tough but almost impossible for a majority of the people who occupy the middle class. Currently, the jobs and opportunities that are in the hands of the middle-class people cannot meet the basic living expenses such as; housing, health care, food, transportation, and to make savings for the future. Thus, to complement the gaps the level of delinquency in the middle class has hit an all time high where the crime rates have and continues to increase.

Most importantly, it is worth mentioning the employment trends in today’s world. Carter (2001) asserts that the world’s population is increasing exponentially where the middle-class population continues to increase geometrically. On analysis, a majority of the middle-class population remain unemployed because there is a creation of few jobs in comparisons to the number of youths graduating in colleges, universities and high schools. As a result, most youths remain unemployed, and those that lack tertiary education training are unable to find lucrative employment. In the end, the unemployed youths seek consolation by engaging in drugs and substance abuse. Additionally, in the instance where they lack money to buy drugs, the unemployed youth engage in crime in the bid of looking for finances to sustain their activities.

In today’s world, the traditional culture has undergone major shift and changes where negative behaviors such as drug abuse have begun to be embraced by the society. In most cases, drug use among the youths in the middle class is seen as an acceptable behavior. Drug use in the middle class now is being emulated and praised among the youths both in the streets and colleges (Hagen et al., 1998). As a result, there has been an increase in the number of people in the middle class who have become addicted to drugs because of regular use of drugs such as alcohol, cocaine, and heroine. Therefore, it can also be argued that the social problems experienced by the middle class have been as a result of changes that have occurred in the traditional culture.

Thomas (1996) suggests that gangs in the middle class emerge as a result of exclusion from the mainstream middle-class culture. In such instance, the youths have recognized that they are likely to be alienated from the status that is valued by the middle class. As a result, they create gangs that tend to offer alternative status and opportunities. In the end, the gangs lead to the emergence of vices such as crime and violence. In most cases, the gang tends to indulge themselves in drugs trade and trafficking in an attempt to generate income for survival and to sustain the gang’s activities.
